An American Dream flavour to Banks’s Manchester-as-City-Of-Destiny saga, where orphaned bairn Jabez Clegg is washed up in the waters of the Irk, adopted by the daughter of clergyman Joshua Brooks, and educated as a Blue Coat Boy at the Chetham’s Hospital School. Lowly beginnings are no impediment to the impeccably honourable, hard working Clegg, however, who vies with dastardly heir Laurence Aspinall all is life – they’re on opposing sides at Peterloo – before bagging a bride and and taking his place among the merchant class.
