2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
The theory that the monolith represents the cinema screen, being identical in proportion to the 70 mm / Cinerama aspect ratio in which the movie itself is shot, signalling the portal through which we may evolve our consciousness via the process of watching our consciousness evolve, is one which can enhance the viewing experience considerably if taken with a quantity of Radcliffe Ricky’s moon cabbage.
Ricky’s cabbage encourages us to reflect that the film’s own opacity mirrors that of its celebrated mystery artefact, and that we gaze into its depths with the same cosmic ignorance as that with which the monkeys regard their sepulchral visitation. “How many times must I be born before I realise what I am?” we ask. Patience, Star-Child, there may be a few still to go.
